Whip-poor-will in the Gloaming

Hearing the haunting call of the whip-poor-will

unseen in its camouflage and fading light.

Poetic nightjar named onomatopoeically after its song,

I am in its ghost house hush,

cluck and flutter about in the gloaming.

Whip-poor-will (Caprimulgus vociferus). Louisville, Kentucky.
